Our 2KK Yapak Scholar, Vic led the session who gave a welcome to our guests and were warmly greeted by the young children before they were divided into grade levels and paired for the activity.
The story, “Oh! The Places You’ll Go” is about who a boy’s journey through life as he attempts to find his place in the world. In his journey as an independent person, the boy goes through several adversities. "You're on your own. And yuiou know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go." The story ends with a learning that to achieve your dreams you must obtain an education - one of the 5 Loves of Kapatid, Love for Learning.
After the storytelling, The volunteers joined in to help out with the children activities. The younger kids (grades 1-3) were asked to claim their future selves and the older kids (grades 3-6) were encouraged to sketch themselves in the future if they were get an education. In the group activity, volunteers teamed up with their partnered kids to draw a map of their how they’d plan to achieving this dream. The two Grade 9 students helped their partnered kids present to their peers and other volunteers.
When asked about highlights of the day, “for us, maybe it's getting to know the kids”, the two high school students said. “We are touched to know that they are really happy with the small things that they have, compared to us who demand for things like phones and gadgets, or the next trend.”
